mopti
Nomad '64
This suite of compositions (with words by poet Bob Walton, and
music by Pete Judge) is a tribute to the American trumpeter and
musical pioneer, Don Cherry, and is based on an imagining of his
visit to Morocco in 1964, his first of many visits to Africa. Five
main sections, interspersed with instrumental interludes, evoke
distinct places and moods on Cherry's musical and personal journey.
'mopti has been one of my favourite groups since I first saw them
three years ago. Pete Judge's Don Cherry-inspired trumpet, John
Hardeman's North African percussion, Steve Alexander's atmospheric
electric guitar and Adam Gittins' bass mastery would be enough,
but when you add digital signal processing, Bob Walton's searing,
evocative poetry, and Reuben Knutson's slide and film projections,
you have a potent and unique experience. Mesmerising and inspirational.'
